Dr. Abiola Akanmu
Associate Professor and Director of the Smart Systems Lab
Dr. Abiola Akanmu is an Associate Professor of Smart Design and Construction at the Myers Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech. She heads the Smart Systems laboratory, focusing on harnessing technological advancements to enhance workforce development, as well as health and safety initiatives.
Dr. Akanmu’s research endeavors have garnered substantial support, exceeding $20 million, leading to the publication of over 100 peer-reviewed articles and the receipt of various awards including Faculty Fellow and Excellence in Scholarship and Outreach.
These achievements have been made possible through private organizations, federal entities, and state agencies, including Trimble, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Dr. M. Reza Hosseini is a Senior Lecturer in Construction Technology at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, The University of Melbourne. His research centers on the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and construction engineering, with a particular focus on automation and technological innovation in construction processes.
With an extensive publication record of over 240 scholarly works, Dr. Hosseini has established himself as a leading voice in digitalized construction and construction engineering. His work spans both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, contributing significantly to the advancement of construction technology implementation.
Dr. Hosseini’s research excellence is recognized globally, placing him among the top 2% of researchers worldwide (2021-2024). His expertise in AI applications and automated systems in construction has attracted substantial research funding and led to numerous successful industry collaborations.
Through his academic leadership and innovative research approaches, Dr. Hosseini continues to shape the future of automated and digitalized construction practices.
